Overview of the Foreign Fire Tax:

Illinois Compiled Statute states that a company, corporation, or association outside of Illinois that sells fire insurance to property owners in the City of Petersburg must pay 2% of the gross receipts to the Illinois Municipal League, which then distributes the funds to the Foreign Fire Insurance Board of the City of Petersburg.

Purpose of the FFT Board

The Firefighters’ Foreign Fire Insurance Board (FFIB) is established pursuant to state law (65 ILCS 5/11-10-2, as amended). Regulation of the FFIB is an exclusive power and function of

the State of Illinois. In accordance with statute, the FFIB is composed of seven (7) trustees:

the Fire Chief, who serves by virtue of rank, and six (6) members elected at-large by the sworn members of the Fire Department. Funds received from out-of-state insurance companies for the FFIB must be used for the maintenance, use, or benefit of the Fire Department. The FFIB has the authority to determine how these funds are allocated within those statutory parameters.
